Paola Saccomandi

Paola received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma in 2014. During her studies, she has worked in the field of Measurements and Instrumentation for biomedical applications. From 2014 to 2016 she was a postdoctoral researcher in the HandBot project (PRIN), for the development and metrological characterization of tactile sensors to be embedded within an anthropomorphic robotic hand.
From 2016 to 2018 she was a postdoctoral researcher at IHU - Institute of Image-Guided Surgery of Strasbourg, where she was also the Principal Investigator of several projects related to thermometry during minimally invasive thermal therapies.
In 2017 she received the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in Measurements, and in the same year her project LASER OPTIMAL was awarded the prestigious ERC Starting grant (1.5 M€). In May 2018 she has joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. Author of more than 140 publications in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, she is an IEEE Senior Member, officer of the IEEE Italy Sensors Chapter, technical program chair and organizer of special sessions in several IEEE international conferences. Currently, she is also the Principal Investigator of projects funded by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), Fondazione Cariplo and Regione Lombardia. The main research interests of Paola and her team include fiber optic sensors and biomedical imaging for physiological parameters monitoring, and the development of light-based approaches for hyperthermal treatment and monitoring.
